Lightsabers, those iconic energy weapons from a galaxy far, far away have captured the imagination of people all over the world since their introduction in 1977. In this blog post, we will explore the development of Lightsabers over the years and how they have transitioned from movie magic to sport spectacle.

Lightsabers first appeared in the Star Wars universe in 1977, in the movie Star Wars: A New Hope. In that film, Lightsabers were nothing more than simple props used for effect. The Lightsabers seen in A New Hope were made out of dowel rods wrapped in tape, with a small flash bulb attached to the end. We actually have a replica of this saber available, it is know as The Graflex. We call it the OG saber!

These early Lightsabers were not meant to be used in actual combat, and as such they were not very durable. Effects were added ontop in post editing to create the saber effect. The only problem was when it pointed towards the camera it appeared to be more of a flatsaber than a lightsaber at times!

As fans began to demand more realistic lightsaber battles, the technology behind the weapons began to evolve. In 1985’s Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Lightsabers were made out of metal tubing with a polycarbonate blade. These Lightsabers were much more durable than the ones seen in A New Hope, and could actually be used in combat. However, they were still not very realistic, as the blade was not able to light up.

The first Lightsabers that were truly realistic were created by Master Replicas in 2002. These Lightsabers were made out of aluminum and had a polycarbonate blade that could light up. They were also very durable, as they were able to withstand actual combat. This is when things started to get interesting for saber enthusiasts.

Today, Lightsabers are made out of aluminum with polycarbonate blades that have hundreds of tiny LEDs inside them capable of producing the most incredible saber effects. They are also very durable, as they are able to withstand proper saber combat.

Lightsaber technology has come a long way since the days of A New Hope, and today we have Lightsabers that are indistinguishable from the ones seen in the movies.
